Filters
Every value on the dashboard is a filter. Click one, and the whole dashboard shows only what has it.
Filtered by Google, the dashboard shows which pages visitors from Google arrived on, where they were and which goals they reached. Add France, and it’s visitors from Google in France. Worth reading first: what visits, visitors and pageviews count under a filter, which isn’t always what you’d expect.
Adding and removing
Click a page, a source, a channel, a country, a browser or any other value in a pane, and every figure, the chart and every pane narrow to it. The filter shows at the top as a chip: click the chip to remove it. To open a page or a referrer itself rather than filter by it, use the arrow that appears when you hover over its row.
Filters combine, up to 6, and every one must hold: filtered by Google and by France, the dashboard shows visits from Google in France. Values are matched exactly.
Filters, like the dates, go with you between the Overview, the Speed page, the Errors page and the Bots page, and a row on any of those adds one to the page it’s on. They’re in the address too, with the date range, so you can bookmark a filtered view or share it with anyone who can see the site, which for a site with public stats is anyone.
What each figure counts
- Visits are the visits whose first pageview matched. Filtered by Google, they’re the visits that arrived from Google.
- Visitors are those whose first pageview of the day matched. Someone who came direct in the morning and from Google in the afternoon is a visit from Google, but not a visitor from Google.
- Pageviews are the pageviews that matched.
Only the first pageview of a visit carries its source, channel and campaign, since the pages after it are reached from the site itself. So for traffic from a source, a channel or a campaign, read visits and visitors rather than pageviews.
Filtering by a page
Pageviews are that page’s views, but visits and visitors are only those that started on it. No figure counts the visits that saw the page further in. Bounce rate, visit duration, and the Entry pages and Exit pages tabs aren’t shown.
Filtering by an entry or exit page
From the Entry pages or Exit pages tab, a filter narrows the dashboard to the visits that started, or ended, on that page, and pageviews to every pageview of those visits, on any page. It counts only visits that have ended. Top pages, the content drilldown, links, site search, errors, engagement, the hours and page speed aren’t available, and the chart shows days rather than hours.
Filtering by a goal
From the Goals pane, a filter turns the dashboard into the visits that reached the goal: its conversions, where they came from, what they used and the custom properties they carried, each value with a conversion rate of its own. Links, site search, errors, engagement, the hours and page speed aren’t available, and the chart shows days rather than hours. See Goals.
Links, site search, errors, engagement and speed
Each is counted page by page, with its page’s source, country, browser, custom properties and the rest, so any filter but an entry or exit page or a goal narrows them, and filtered by a page, speed and engagement are that page’s own. A click on a link or a download counts with the visit it was made in and on the page it was made on: filtered by Google, outbound clicks are those in visits from Google. fivebar began counting them page by page on 24 September 2026, so a filter over days before then finds none.
A site search is counted the same way as a click, from 3 October 2026, when fivebar began counting searches: filtered by a page, the searches made on it, and filtered by Google, those in visits from Google.
